We headed for the East coast, a 7 hour journey from Jaffna to Passikudah Bay, about 28km north of Batticaloa.
Some of the most stunning beaches in the whole of Sri Lanka lie along this stretch of coastline, but much of the accommodation here was destroyed during the civil war. The area is only now being slowly redeveloped. Our hotel, Maalu Maalu Resort, a little oasis of 5 star luxury, occupies prime position set a few metres back from the sea in the middle of a beautiful horse-shoe shaped bay, where bathing is safe and the sand crumbles like icing sugar. This is a perfect place to unwind. High season here is April to September, but by February the monsoon season is over and the water is warm. For the next two days we seem to have the hotel and the whole beach almost to ourselves.
